Bonito Earns Triple Double in 3-2 Thriller over King

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Cassidy Bonito posted a triple-double of 10 kills, 37 assists and 16 digs and Belmont Abbey hit .500 in the decisive fifth set to hold off King 3-2 (25-23, 25-14, 26-28, 25-21, 15-11) in women's volleyball action on Saturday.

Lydia Sale earned her second double-double in as many nights with 10 kills and 14 digs, while Mackenzie Chrapliwy posted a team-best 15 kills.

The win was the first for the Crusaders in Bristol since King joined Conference Carolinas in 2012.

King held a lead throughout the first half of the first set, leading 9-4 and 15-11. But the Crusaders engineered a 6-1 run to gain their first lead, 17-16. Later, the Tornado scored three straight to move back ahead 22-20, but The Abbey answered with four straight points for set point. Attack errors by both teams gave BAC the set, 25-23.

The second set was all Belmont Abbey. It never trailed and broke a 2-2 tie with five straight points. After King closed to 11-9, the Crusaders scored seven of the next eight to lead by eight, 18-10. They answered a Tornado point with three more and went on to win the set on a kill by Sale.

Belmont Abbey had three match points in the third set, but King fought off each, going to extra points for a 28-26 victory, then evened the match with a 25-21 triumph.

But the Crusaders righted the ship in the fifth. After King started with a point, Belmont Abbey used a pair of 3-0 runs around another King point for a 6-2 lead. The Tornado closed to 8-6 and 9-7, but The Abbey used back-to-back points to lead by four. King again got within two, 13-11, but the Crusaders took the match with the final two points.

Belmont Abbey returns home on Wednesday after six straight on the road. The Crusaders host Winston-Salem State at 7 p.m.
