WILSON, N.C. -- A trio of Crusaders had nine kills each, but a .090 hitting percentage sent Belmont Abbey to a 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 19-25, 25-20) setback at Barton in women's volleyball action Saturday.
Mackenzie Chrapliwy, Cassidy Bonito and Brianna Morgheim led the offensive attack, while Sarah Kenney had 23 digs for the defense. Bonito added 28 assists with Lydia Sale Chrapliwy chipping in 11 digs each.
Belmont Abbey (9-8, 5-3) trailed 2-1 early on, but scored three straight points for a 4-2 lead. Barton (14-6, 9-0) tied the set at 7, but the Crusaders used a 5-0 run to go back in front. With the score 15-11, the Bulldogs rallied to score three straight and five of the next six points for to even the score at 16-16. Barton tallied four straight points to turn an 18-18 tie into 20-18, then held off the Crusaders to take the opening set 25-22.
Barton started the second set with four straight and opened a 7-1 lead before The Abbey rallied with back-to-back points. But three in a row by the Bulldogs put them in control and led to a 25-17 set win.
The Crusaders never trailed in the third, tallying the first two points en route to a 4-1 lead. The score was 11-4 when Barton tallied three in a row, but The Abbey righted the ship and traded points to 20-16. The Bulldogs used a 4-1 spurt to close to within 21-19, but Belmont Abbey ended the set with four straight for a 25-19 victory.
In the fourth set, Belmont Abbey led 15-13, but three Bulldog point gave them the lead. After consecutive kills put the Crusaders back in front, Barton scored five straight to seize control and take the set, 25-20.
Belmont Abbey returns to action Tuesday night at Bob Jones.
