MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Brianna Morgheim had 10 kills and hit .421 and Cassidy Bonito tallied 31 assists, leading Belmont Abbey to a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-17, 25-13) women's volleyball victory over Mount Olive Friday night.
Mackenzie Chrapliwy tallied nine kills, with Lexi Henriott and Coreen Norwood adding eight and seven, respectively. Sarah Kenney had 16 digs to lead the defensive effort. As a team, the Crusaders (9-7, 5-2) outhit the Trojans (8-12, 4-5) .268 to .062.
Belmont Abbey trailed 9-7 in the opening set, but scored three straight points to take the lead. After a service error tied the score at 10, the Crusaders added rattled off four in a row on Bonito's serve. Another service error made the score 14-11, but another 4-0 run pushed the lead to seven, 18-11. Mount Olive tried to rally, closing to within three at 22-19 and 23-20, but kills by Chrapliwy and Henriott gave The Abbey a 1-0 lead in sets.
The second set saw the Crusaders pull away with another big run. They broke a 6-6 deadlock with seven straight points and led by no less than five after that. With the score 22-17, Belmont Abbey scored the final three points to take the second set 25-17.
Belmont Abbey opened the third with three straight, but Mount Olive quickly responded to take a 4-3 lead. Later, with the set even at 7, the Crusaders ran off six in a row to start an 8-1 run to lead 15-8. After back-to-back points by the Trojans, The Abbey tallied three straight as part of a 7-1 run spurt for a 22-11 lead. Chrapliwy ended the contest with a kill for a 25-13 victory.
The Crusaders continue their road trip with a 2 p.m. match at league leader and defending champion Barton.
