BELMONT, N.C. -- Senior Coreen Norwood had 10 kills without an error and Lydia Sale added nine kills, lifting Belmont Abbey to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-22) victory over Mount Olive Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball action. Cassidy Bonito added eight kills and 33 assists in the Homecoming win.
As a team, Belmont Abbey (8-6, 4-2) hit .269, while limiting the Trojans (7-9, 3-3) to .049. They had 26 kills and 21 errors during the contest.
The Crusaders dominated the opening set by registering 17 kills against only four errors (.433). After falling behind 3-1, The Abbey took nine of the next 10 points for a 10-4 lead. A 7-4 surge pushed the lead to 17-8 before UMO tallied three unanswered points. The Crusaders continued to push, though, and went on to take the set, 25-15.
The second set started out all Belmont Abbey ad the Crusaders rode Bonito's serve to an 8-1 lead. The Trojans were able to pull within five at 20-15, but three straight points switched the momentum and led to the 25-18 victory.
The final set again was all Belmont Abbey in the beginning with the first six points going to the Crusaders. With the lead 15-8, Mount Olive used a 8-3 run to close to within two, 18-16, but back-to-back points by The Abbey provided some cushion. The margin was again just two at 23-21 when Lanie Healey and Norwood had kills around an attack error to seal the victory.
Belmont Abbey has a rare stretch of nine days off before starting a six-match road swing Oct. 10 at Winston Salem.
