SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Belmont Abbey closed the 2016 regular season on Saturday with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-16) victory over Converse, clinching a home quarterfinal match in the Conference Carolinas Championship. The result, combined with a King loss at Erskine, gives the Crusaders the No. 2 North seed and a date with Limestone Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Wheeler Center.
Mackenzie Chrapliwy had a double-double of 12 kills and 12 digs, while Sarah Kenney added a team-best 16 digs. Gabby Martinez tallied 23 assists, while Cassidy Bonito added 14. As a team, Belmont Abbey hit .299, while limiting the Valkyries to a percentage of .021.
Belmont Abbey (18-12, 12-4) jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the opening set before Converse evened the score at 11-11. But a service error followed by two aces by Tabitha Sims started an 8-0 run that led to a 25-17 victory. Another early run in the second sparked the Crusaders. They led 9-3 but four straight points by the Valkyries closed the margin to 16-14. The gap was still two, 19-17, when The Abbey tallied the final six points of the set for another 25-17 win.
The third set started in opposite fashion as a 5-1 deficit was reversed with eight straight points on Kenney's serve. Converse never fully recovered, closing only to 16-13 before a 7-0 run sealed the victory.
