The Belmont Abbey Women's Volleyball team fell at Limestone 3-0 this evening in the quarterfinal round of the Conference Carolina's Tournament. Set scores were 25-14, 25-19, and 25-19. Limestone advances to the semifinal round as it improves to 18-6, while the Crusaders end their season with a mark of 16-14.
The first set was the slowest for the Crusaders, who were not able to take a lead after jumping in front 6-5 early. The Saints took the set 25-14.
Set two was much more competitive. Each time the Saints tried to pull away, the Abbey responded, pulling to within a point five times, including three kills by senior Caitlin Hankins in a span of five serves. This made the score 15-14 in favor of Limestone before the Saints put together a 4-0 run which the Crusaders were unable to recover from. Limestone won set two 25-19.
Set three was the Abbey's strongest, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. A 3-1 run by the Crusaders gave the Abbey a 12-7 lead. The Saints then went on an 8-0 for a one point lead. Another Saints spurt put Limestone on top before sealing the match with a 25-19 win.
Senior Hannah Schellenberg led the Crusaders with seven kills, with Hankins contributing six. Gabby Martinez led the team with 18 assists. Martinez, along with freshman Sarah Kenney, paced the defense with nine digs each. Hankins contributed two block assists and one block solo with Schellenberg and Dani Fortunato adding one each.
