The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team lost twice by 3-1 scores this afternoon, losing a Conference Carolinas match to North Greenville, then later falling to Bluefield State. Both matches were held at North Greenville University. Belmont Abbey won the opening set in both matches but lost three straight in the ensuing sets as the Crusaders are now 14-12 overall and 8-6 in Conference Carolinas.
In the opening match of the afternoon, the Crusaders dropped a four set decision to North Greenville by scores of 25-17, 19-25, 20-25 and 18-25. Belmont Abbey hit .229 as senior outside hitter Hannah Schellenberg led all players with 20 kills, hitting .304 for the match. She was the only Crusader to reach double figures. Aimee Cloninger totaled nine with Caitlin Hankins and Coreen Norwood both added eight. Norwood hit .353 for the match and added two block assists.
Cloninger's 15 digs led the way, with Schellenberg totaling 13 and Kenney 12.
In the final match of the day, Belmont Abbey jumped ahead 1-0 over Bluefield State with a 25-23 opening set victory, but Bluefield State seized momentum with a 25-10 win in set two behind a .526 attack. It would go on to win the match with wins by scores of 25-23 and 26-24.
Schellenberg's 19 kills led all players with Dani Fortunato adding 12. Martinez posted 41 assists with a service ace. Schellenberg added two aces. Kenney and Schellenberg both led the Crusaders with eight digs apiece.
Belmont Abbey is off until Friday night at 7:00 when it welcomes Limestone for Senior Weekend. The regular season concludes with Senior Day Saturday, November 7 when hosting Converse and Winston-Salem State.
