Belmont Abbey senior Hannah Schellenberg hit .538, smacking down 22 kills with just one error on 39 total attacks as the Crusaders women's volleyball team easily swept the visiting Lees-McRae Bobcats 3-0 this evening inside the Wheeler Center. Scores were 25-20, 25-11 and 25-19. Belmont Abbey improves to 13-8 overall and 7-3 in Conference Carolinas, while the Bobcats fall to 4-17 overall and 3-7 in the league.
The two teams will meet again Saturday in Banner Elk.
Schellenberg led an offense that hit .284, as she had 15 kills midway through the second set. She had 22 of the team's 39 kills as the Crusaders totaled just 12 errors on 95 total attacks. She added four service aces. Caitlin Hankins added eight kills as she hit .462. She had just two errors on 13 attacks. Coreen Norwood added five kills with Emily Rose and Dani Fortunato adding two each.
Defensively, the Crusaders recorded seven total blocks as Norwood totaled three block assists and one solo. Fortunato, Rose and Cloninger had one each.
Belmont Abbey outdug the Bobcats 41-37 as Martinez and Cloninger led the way with nine each. Schellenberg finished with eight and Kenney totaled seven.
The Crusaders are back in action Friday night when traveling to King. First serve is 7:00 p.m.
