The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team closed the 2014 regular season with a pair of five set matches, earning a 3-2 win at Converse before falling 3-2 to GRU Augusta. Both matches were played at Converse. The Crusaders close the regular season with a mark of 14-16 overall and a final Conference Carolinas mark of 10-6.
The 10-6 conference record is third in the North and the Crusaders will open the 2014 Conference Carolinas Tournament Tuesday at 6:30 in Gaffney, South Carolina against Limestone, the number two seed in the South.
Belmont Abbey defeated the Valkyries by scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 17-25 and 15-11.
Junior outside hitter Hannah Schellenberg led three Crusaders in double figures with 19 kills. Caitlin Hankins added 13 and Coreen Norwood posted ten. Dani Fortunato added eight. Gabby Martinez handed out 42 assists with Fortunato and Kennedy Haupt adding two each. Martinez, Fortunato, Norwood and Tabitha Sims all had two service aces.
Defensively, Martinez led the way with 16 digs. Sims, the libero, added 14. Deidre Rodriguez totaled nine.
At the net, Norwood tallied two block assists with Schellenberg and Haupt adding one each.
The Jaguars rallied from a 2-1 hole to earn a 3-2 win. GRU Augusta won by scores of 25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 25-13 and 15-11.
Hankins led the Crusaders with 12 kills. Norwood added 11 with Haupt and McKenna Murphy both adding 10. Martinez handed out 39 assists. Schellenberg recorded four and two service aces. Norwood totaled three aces with Martinez and Sims adding one each.
Schellenberg's 19 digs was the team-high. Sims added 16, Martinez 14 and Haupt 13.
Norwood recorded both of the Abbey's blocks, posting two solos.
