Women's Volleyball Closes Home Schedule With 3-1 Victory Over Virginia State

Belmont Abbey sophomore Dani Fortunato recorded a career-high 15 kills and freshman Kennedy Haupt added 12 kills, four service aces and 16 digs as the Crusaders women's volleyball team closed out the 2014 home schedule with a 3-1 defeat of Virginia State this evening inside the Wheeler Center. Scores were 21-25, 25-17, 25-22 and 25-12. 

The Crusaders even their record to 13-13, while the Trojans drop to 14-5.

Belmont Abbey hit .273 as Fortunato reached double figures for just the second time in her career as her 15 kills came on 38 attacks with just two errors (.342). Haupt added 12 kills, two shy of her career-high, with four service aces and an assist. Coreen Norwood added 12 kills on 25 attacks with just three errors (.360), and junior Caitlin Hankins hit a solid .533, posting nine kills on 15 attacks with just one error.

Setter Gabby Martinez handed out 45 assists and posted a pair of service aces. 

Defensively, Tabitha Sims logged a career-high 17 digs and Haupt's 16 digs are a new career-best. Her previous best was ten, which she reached on two other occasions. Deidre Rodriguez's 13 digs tied her career-high. Both teams totaled 64 digs on the evening.

Sims and Rodriguez both had three service aces and Norwood finished with one.

At the net, Norwood logged a pair of block solos with Hankins adding one.

The Crusaders will now play their last four matches on the road, starting with Friday night's match at Pfeiffer.
