Women's Volleyball Sweeps Barton, 3-0 To Increase Conference Winning Streak To Four

The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team extended its Conference Carolinas winning streak to four as it claimed its sixth win in the last seven tries with a 3-0 sweep at Barton this evening. The win, which gives the Crusaders the season sweep of the series, came by scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-21. Belmont Abbey improves to 11-13 overall and 8-4 in Conference Carolinas, while Barton falls to 7-14 overall and 5-6 in the league.

Junior outside hitter Hannah Schellenberg, the national leader in kills, led all players with 19 as she raised her season total to 401. She is just the second player to reach 400 kills in a season and the first since 2005. She hit .319 as she slammed down 19 kills on 47 attacks with just four errors. Dani Fortunato recorded seven with McKenna Murphy and Caitlin Hankins both adding five.

Sophomore setter Gabby Martinez handed out 34 assists and was one of six Crusaders to record one service ace, joining Fortunato, Schellenberg, Deidre Rodriguez, Coreen Norwood and Julie Newell.

The defense recorded 55 digs as Newell's 16 led all players. Martinez and Schellenberg both added nine with Rodriguez registering eight.

Belmont Abbey simply dominated the net with ten total blocks, two solo and eight assisted. Hankins totaled three block assists with Martinez and Fortunato tallying a pair each. Norwood added one. Schellenberg had two solo blocks.

The Crusaders are back in action tomorrow at 2:00 when taking on Mount Olive.
