Belmont Abbey junior outside hitter Hannah Schellenberg and sophomore setter Gabby Martinez both posted career-highs in the 3-2 win over Catawba, as Schellenberg totaled 28 kills and Martinez added 57 assists. The Crusaders wrapped up the day with a 3-0 loss to Carson-Newman. Belmont Abbey is now 10-13 on the year.
Belmont Abbey outlasted the Indians 3-2 as it captured the first two sets and won the deciding fifth set after Catawba won sets three and four. Set scores were 25-22, 25-14, 20-25, 16-25 and 15-11.
Schellenberg bested her career-high by two kills as she slammed down 28 on 54 attacks with just five errors (.426). Caitlin Hankins and Dani Fortunato both finished with 11 kills as Hankins hit .526 for the match. Coreen Norwood added eight kills.Martinez smashed her previous best by 15 as she handed out 57 to go along with a service ace and two digs. Deidre Rodriguez led all players with three service aces.
Defensively, Tabitha Sims led all players with 12 digs and Schellenberg added 11. Norwood and Fortunato both had a block assist.
The Eagles earned a 3-0 sweep by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-12. Schellenberg's 18 kills led all players and Kennedy Haupt added eight. Martinez totaled 27 assists.
Schellenberg's 12 digs led all players with Martinez adding eight. Hankins finished with three block assists and Schellenberg totaled a pair.
