The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team lost twice on the final day of the Pioneer Classic hosted by Tusculum Saturday. The Crusaders opened with a 3-1 loss to Flagler and closed the tournament with a 3-0 loss to the hosts. Belmont Abbey is now 1-8 on the year.
Belmont Abbey captured the first set 26-24 but Flagler won the next three (24-26, 18-25 and 23-25) to earn the win.
Junior outside hitter Hannah Schellenberg notched a career-high 26 kills in the loss, besting her previous best by four. She hit .227 for the match and added 11 digs. Caitlin Hankins added seven kills as she hit .353 for the match.
Julie Newell and Dani Fortunato both set career highs in digs, as Newell led all players with 28 and Fortunato recorded 14. Gabby Martinez added 12 to go along with 22 assists. Coreen Norwood added four block assists.
In the final match of the tournament, the Pioneers won by scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-20. Schellenberg's 10 kills led the offense with Hankins adding eight. Martinez and McKenna Murphy both handed out 12 assists.
Defensively Schellenberg's 13 digs led the Crusaders as she was the only player to reach double digits.
Belmont Abbey is back in action Tuesday when it heads back to Tennessee to open the Conference Carolinas schedule with a match at King. That will wrap up the Crusaders season opening ten match road trip. The Crusaders host Southern Wesleyan Friday at 7:00 in the home opener.
