Women's Volleyball Falls Twice On Opening Day Of Pioneer Classic

The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team finished 0-2 on the first day of the Pioneer Classic, hosted by Tusculum. The Abbey opened the day falling to Lander 3-0 and dropping a 3-1 decision to Lincoln Memorial in the final match of the evening. The Abbey is now 1-6.

The Crusaders fell in all three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-14 and 25-19. Belmont Abbey was led by Hannah Schellenberg (13 kills, 10 digs), Gabby Martinez (14 assists), and Julie Newell (17 digs). No other statistics are available at this time.

Lincoln Memorial
Belmont Abbey claimed a 25-23 win in the opening set, but the Railsplitters raliled to win the next three by scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-21.

Both teams hit .112 but Hannah Schellenberg led all players with 19 kills and 15 digs. Dani Fortunato added eight kills. Martinez handed out 18 assists with Deidre Rodriguez adding 17.

Defensively Newell's 18 digs led the way, with Martinez adding 10. Fortunato posted seven block assists with Caitlin Hankins adding six and Coreen Norwood totaling five.

Belmont Abbey is back in action twice tomorrow, taking on Flagler at 1:30 and closing out the tournament with a match against the hosts at 6:30.
