The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team hit .418 as the Crusaders picked up its first win of the 2014 season with a 3-0 sweep at Winston-Salem State this evening. Scores were 25-17, 25-10 and 25-14. Belmont Abbey improves to 1-4, while the Rams drop to 1-5.
All but two Crusaders had at least one kill as junior Hannah Schellenberg led the way with nine as she posted a .375 attack. Caitlin Hankins hit a scorching .857 as the junior slammed down six kills on seven attacks with no errors. McKenna Murphy added seven kills with one error on 11 attacks (.545) to go along with seven assists.
The Crusaders hit .429 in the opening set, followed that up with a .435 and closed the match with a .375 mark in the deciding frame. For the night, the Crusaders recorded 35 kills on 67 attacks with just seven errors. Gabby Martinez handed out 14 assists. Martinez-along with Julie Newell and Deidre Rodriguez-also had a pair of service aces. Schellenberg and Coreen Norwood both had one.
Defensively the Crusaders dominated the net to the mark of 12 total blocks, led by Hankins's five assisted. Murphy had two solo.
Murphy led the way with five digs with Martinez and Schellenberg recording four each.
The Crusaders ten match, season opening road trip continues this weekend with four matches at the Tusculum Pioneers Classic, starting with two matches on Friday against Lander and Lincoln Memorial.
