The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team closed out the 2014 Newberry Invitational with a pair of 3-1 losses to 15th-ranked Wingate and Newberry. Belmont Abbey is 0-4 and will be back in action Tuesday night at Winston-Salem State.
The Crusaders won the opening set 25-23 before falling three straight by scores of 25-12, 25-14 and 25-13.
The Crusaders hit . 193 for the match as Hannah Schellenberg and McKenna Murphy both totaled 10 kills with Caitlin Hankins adding seven. Schellenberg hit .323 as she did not commit and error on 31 attacks. Gabby Martinez handed out 23 assists to go along with a pair of service aces, while Murphy handed out eight assists.
At the net, Hankins led the way with two block asssists with four more players adding one each. Tabitha Sims led all players with nine digs.
In the final match of the tournament, the Crusaders knotted the match at one with a 25-20 set two victory, but the Wolves pulled away with wins by scores of 25-14 and 25-18. Newberry grabbed the opening set by a 25-18 score.
Schellenberg paced the offense with 12 kills as she finished the tournament with 60 and a .308 hitting percentage.
Coreen Norwood added nine kills on 15 attacks with one error (.533). Martinez handed out 15 assists with Murphy totaling 13.
Schellenberg led the way with 13 digs as she finished the weekend with two double doubles.
Defensively, Dani Fortunato recorded three block assists with Murphy and Hankins adding a pair.
