The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team opened the 2014 season with a pair of losses on the opening day of the Newberry Invitational. The Crusaders dropped a pair of 3-0 scores to Peach Belt members USC Aiken and Columbus State as the Abbey wraps up the tournament with two matches tomorrow. The Crusaders open the day at 9:00 a.m. against Wingate and close out the day with a tilt against the hosts at 5:00 p.m.
In the opener, the Abbey fell 25-14, 25-19 and 25-22. Junior Hannah Schellenberg led all players with 19 kills as she hit .364 for the match to go along with 12 digs and a block assist. Gabby Martinez handed out 13 assists.
In their first collegiate matches, freshmen McKenna Murphy, Coreen Norwood and Kennedy Haupt posted 12 digs, four block assists and two block assists, respectively. Murphy, along with Abby Stine, had two service aces. Stine, the libero, recorded 11 digs.
The Crusaders fell in three sets by scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 25-22 as Schellenberg again posted 19 kills, hitting .341 for the match. Martinez handed out 10 assists and a pair of service aces with Murphy adding nine and one ace.
Stine's ten digs paced the defense with Martinez totaling seven.
