The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team captured its eighth victory in the last nine matches as the Crusaders earned a 3-1 road win at Pfeiffer Friday night in Merner Gymnasium. Belmont Abbey won the first two sets and won the fourth after dropping the penultimate set. Scores were 25-18, 25-21, 19-25 and 25-15. The win moves the Abbey's ledger to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in Conference Carolinas, while Pfeiffer falls to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in league play.
The Crusaders overcame a slow start in the opening set as the Falcons bolted out to a 5-1 lead, but the Abbey responded by winning nine of the next 14 points to move ahead 10-9. After a Pfeiffer kill knotted the set at 10, Belmont Abbey pulled away as it yielded just eight more points to coast to a 25-18 victory.
In the second set the Abbey bolted out to an 10-5 run that forced a Falcons timeout, but the pause did not help the Falcons, as the Crusaders won the next five points to move ahead 15-6. The cushion moved to as high as 11 at 21-10, but the Falcons won the next five points to chop the lead down to six at 21-15.
After a service error moved the Abbey's lead to 23-16, Pfeiffer closed the gap to three at 23-20 as it claimed the next four points and forced an Abbey timeout. After the break, a Lydia Schellenberg kill and a Pfeiffer attack error gave the Abbey the 25-21 win.
Pfeiffer kept the contest alive with a 25-19 third set win, but the Crusaders quickly ended any thought of a five set contest as they raced out to an 11-6 lead. The advantage rose to 18-8 before the Falcons won the next four points, but a Hannah Schellenberg kill halted any Pfeiffer momentum as the Crusaders won five of the last eight points to seal the victory.
Lydia Schellenberg led the Crusaders with 10 kills and Hannah Schellenberg posted eight. Caitlin Hankins and Tori Jensen both added seven. Gabby Martinez and Abby Stine both handed out 15 assists while Hannah Schellenberg and Ana Maria Pagan both totaled a pair.
Defensively, Pagan's 13 digs led the Crusaders, while Hannah Schellenberg totaled nine. Jensen and Dani Fortunato both totaled three block assists.
