ROCK HILL, SC - The Belmont Abbey Track & Field teams competed in today's Winthrop/Adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, SC. It is the second outdoor meet of the 2017 season.
The highlight of the day for the women was Junior Natalie Nelson coming in first place in the Heptathlon javelin with a 27.89m throw. She also competed in the 200 meter race, which she finished in 29.3-seconds.
On the men's side, freshman Julian Smallwood, who set a Belmont Abbey Outdoor Track & Field record with a 15.6 meter throw. This earned him fourth-place finish overall out of 31 throwers.
Sophomore Matthew Difrancesco was also solid, completing the 100m race in 11.2 seconds, good enough for second in his heat. He also ran the 200m in 22.73 seconds. Also racing in the 200m was Alex Abalos, who finished in 23.64 seconds.
Assistant coach and alumnus Dustin Stewart competed unattached in the Decathlon Javelin and 1500m, with alumnus Joe Thierfelder right behind him in second place.
Head Coach Nick Radkewich commented on today's action: "It was a great outdoor debut for most of the team, and an exciting start to the meet waiting for the events tomorrow."
The action will continue tomorrow at the Irwin Belk Track at Winthrop University
