BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey wrestling team competed in their first home match this season as they took on King University inside the Wheeler Center. King recorded the win with a 30-10 team score. Nick Lukanich, Greg Hilliard, and Jake Glunt all recorded wins for the Abbey. The Crusaders' record moves to 3-4 on the season and 0-1 within the ECAC.
The opening match in the 125 weight class between King's Reed Jacks and the Abbey's Michael Bedard saw very competitive wrestling which resulted in Reed gaining the 5-4 victory grabbing two points in the final 20 seconds of the match.
In the 133 matchup Belmont Abbey's Nick Lukanich controlled majority of the match against King's Jacob Wynn. Lukanich tied up the team score with a 5-1 decision.
In the 141 matchup King's Dustin Kirk was able to record the pin 2:42 over the Abbey's John Gahagan.
The 149 match between King's Ethyn Ewing and Belmont Abbey's Santonio Thompson found itself deadlocked four different times before Ewing recorded a takedown with seconds remaining in the match earning the 10-8 decision.
Greg Hilliard controlled the 157 match over King's Corey Collins leading 2-0 after the first period and 6-0 after the second. Hilliard was able to secure the 13-0 major decision victory.
John Glunt jumped out to an early lead in the 165 weight class match with King's Darius Rutland and ended the first period with a 4-1 lead. Glunt was able to come away with the 9-2 decision.
King's Joey Mammolenti got on the board quickly against Seth Bridgeman in the 174 weight class registering a technical fall 18-2.
The 184 matchup was very competitive as King's Eljah Seay and the Crusaders' Luke Glunt took a 2-2 tie into the final minute of the first period before Seay recorded four quick points and held the 6-2 lead after the first. Seay registered two more points early in the second and ended up winning with a major decision 13-2.
In the final bout of the evening, the 285 weight class, Chass Delgado took on King's Cody Davis. After a scoreless first period Delgado earned a point in the second and held that lead into the third. Davis recorded two points early in the third but Delgado answered immediately with a point of his own to send it into extra time. Davis was able to record a two point take-down to earn the victory.
The Crusaders next match will be at Coker December 7. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
