Wrestling Starts Season at Pembroke Open

PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Belmont Abbey wrestling program opened their season at the 36th Annual Pembroke Classic tournament hosted by UNC Pembroke. The Crusaders sent 12 competitors to the mat throughout the tournament.

In the 141 weight class Travis Allen and Jonathan Charpenter both advanced to the third round with three point victories in the second round, 16-13 and 5-2, respectively. Allen then proceeded to the fifth round in the consolation bracket winning with a pin in the fourth round.

Greg Hilliard competed in the 157 weight division advancing to the quarterfinals following a pin in the third round. Hilliard claimed fourth place in the division after recording his second pin of the tournament in the sixth round.

Tanner Kump and Chandler Echols took the mat in the Open 165 and advanced to the second round, Echols recorded a pin in the process.

In the 174 class Crusaders Tyran Cobble and Ben Knaus both participated. Knaus wrestled his way to the third round pinning his opponent in the second round.  

Five Crusaders fought in the 184 weight class, Tyler MacLaine, Seth Bridgeman, Luke Glunt, John Wilson, and Brian Girard all contended. Bridgeman and Glunt each advanced to the third round with a pin. Bridgeman then raced to the fifth round of the consolation bracket tallying a 7-2 win in the process. MacLaine reached the fifth round as well through a pin and 7-6 decision. Wilson battled to the fourth round, in that bracket, accumulating a pin.

The wrestling team will travel to St. Andrews Tuesday to face off with the Knights. That match will begin at 1:00 p.m.
