Wrestling Concludes 2014-15 Home Schedule With 22-15 Victory Over Limestone

The Belmont Abbey wrestling team wrapped up the 2014-15 home schedule with a 22-15 victory over the visiting Limestone Saints this evening inside the Wheeler Center.

The Crusaders won the first six bouts of the evening but had to hold off a late Saints charge and the issue was still in doubt until Chaas Delgado earned a 2-0 win at heavyweight in the final bout of the evening to secure the 22-15 victory.

Patrick Mestrez, ranked seventh nationally and atop the regional rankings at 125, moved the Abbey ahead 3-0 with a 4-0 victory, securing a third period takedown and a riding time point after leading just 1-0 on a stall penalty in the first.

Will Rees then outlasted Christopher Diaz Rivera at 133 by a 9-5 count, scoring six of his nine points in the third.

Will James, one of four seniors competing for the final time on the Wheeler Center mat, scored a 2-0 win at 141, using a second period escape point and a riding time of 1:51 to secure a 2-0 victory.

The next match saw Scott Bosak outlast Nicholas Leitten in the 149 pound match by a 7-6 score. Bosak, who had only surrendered just one point in 11 bouts, moved his season record to a sterling 12-0.

Daniel Callahan, the fourth-ranked wrestler in the region at 157, won for the ninth time in his last ten matches with an easy 11-3 major decision victory, and Jake Glunt pushed the Crusaders lead to 19-0 with an 11-5 victory (which included a riding time of 5:30) at 165.

Limestone then made things interesting, as it won the next two bouts by fall to cut the Abbey lead to 19-12. At 174, Patrick Argast was leading Matthew Ostermiller 4-3 with 46 seconds left in the bout until Ostermiller recorded the pinfall.

One bout later, at 184, Limestone's Caleb Rivera pinned Gerry Vassil just 1:26 into the bout to cut the lead to 19-12.

With two bouts left, Limestone cut the deficit to 19-15 with Justin Tribble's 6-1 win at 197, but Delgado preserved the win with two points in the third period, scoring an escape and a riding time point.
