BELMONT, NC - The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team hosted Limestone this afternoon in its Raise the Red game. Limestone won the contest 15-6. The Crusaders moved to 3-2 on the year with a 2-1 conference mark. The Saints improved to 5-0 in 2017 and 3-0 in Conference Carolinas play.
The Abbey struck first as senior Katelin Glass scored off a pass from Rebecca Luca at the 25:51 mark. From there, the whole first half was back and forth. The Saints took a 3-1 lead before attacker Caitlin Cook assisted Rebecca Stromberg and Marin Felsoci for a 3-3 tie. Limestone scored a man-up goal at the 11:44 mark, but Luca responded with a goal of her own on another pass from Cook. With 2:43 to play in the period, Cook did the goal scoring with the help of Luca. The game was tied at five at halftime.
Just a few minutes into the second half, the Saints took a 6-5 lead. It only took 19 seconds for Luca to win the draw control and dash down the field for a goal and a 6-6 tie. The Abbey continued to get shots up, but just not into the net. The Abbey defense also forced Limestone into a six-minute span of only scoring one goal. At the end, however, the Saints took the 15-6 win.
On the day, Luca led the team with two goals, while also handing out two assists. Cook tallied a goal as well as a team-high three assists. Defender Amber Eakins picked up three ground balls. Sophomore Annie Brannon made seven saves in goal.
Belmont Abbey will next take the field on Saturday, when it welcomes Wingate for a 1pm start time.
