HICKORY, NC - The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team won a thrilling 9-8 overtime contest this evening at Lenoir-Rhyne. The victory moves the Crusaders to 3-0 on the year, while the Bears move to 0-1.
Attacker Rebecca Luca scored first for the Crusaders off a nice pass from Erin Kunkel to tie the game at one. At the 15:09 mark, attacker Caitlin Cook found the back of the net to notch the game at two. Later in the half, Katelin Glass assisted Marin Felsoci on a goal, then scored a goal of her own about two minutes later, giving the Abbey a 4-3 advantage. With five seconds left in the half, the Crusaders took a 5-3 lead on a timely score by Rebecca Stromberg.
The Abbey defense held Lenoir-Rhyne to just one goal over the first 10 minutes of the second. With 19:58 to play, Stromberg scored her second goal of the day to increase the Crusader lead to 7-4. The Bears went on to tie the contest up at seven, but Felsoci gave Belmont Abbey the lead back with her second goal of the day at the 12:43 mark. The teams continued to battle close, with neither defense letting up. It would take overtime to determine the winner of the contest.
It did not take long for the Abbey to take control. Stromberg won the initial draw control of the period, and 52 seconds later Felsoci found the net for the third time on the night to give the Abbey a 9-8 victory.
Belmont Abbey will next welcome Florida Tech on Friday for a 3:30pm contest at Alumni Field.
