BELMONT, N.C. -- Senior Anna Mixa homered and drove in three runs while sophomore Morgan Smith had three hits on the day, leading Belmont Abbey to a softball doubleheader split with Mount Olive Wednesday afternoon at Crusader Field. The Abbey won the first game 5-2, but fell just short 1-0 in the nightcap.
Mount Olive (14-20, 5-5) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but Mixa cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run to deep center. It was her second of the season and second in as many days. She struck again in the bottom of the fifth when she laced a bases-loaded, one-out single to center, plating two runs to give the Crusaders a 3-2 lead. Wilson drove home a run with a sacrifice fly before pinch hitter Alyssa Sciaudone singled down the left-field line to push the lead to 5-2.. During the contest, Belmont Abbey out-hit the Trojans 10-3.
Annabeth Watkins (5-10) earned the win, scattering the three hits and one walk. She fanned one in the complete-game effort, allowing only one earned run. Mount Olive starter Mallory Ratcliff (7-6) took the loss, pitching 4.1 innings before being substituted.
In the second game, the Trojans would score the only of the game on an RBI single in the fifth. Belmont Abbey tried to rally in the seventh, putting runners on first and second with one out, but could not get the tying run across. Smith had two hits in the contest after singling in the opener. Emily Chaisson (4-6) pitched the complete-game shutout for UMO, while Ivorie Maltby (4-9) suffered the hard-luck loss, scattering seven hits and five walks over 7.0 innings of relief.
Belmont Abbey has over a week off for Easter before returning to action on Friday, April 6 at Southern Wesleyan.
