BELMONT, N.C. -- Four different players registered hits on Saturday as Belmont Abbey dropped a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader against Erskine at Crusaders Field. The Flying Fleet took the opener 6-0 before winning the nightcap 8-2.
Erskine (11-11, 4-0) used a home run in the fourth to take the lead in the opener, then added two in the fifth and three in the seventh. Pegram's double was to the gap in right center in the fourth inning. Morgan Hendrix (7-3) gained the win, while Annabeth Watkins (3-9) suffered the loss.
In the second game, Erskine plated two runs in the first and three in the second to open a 5-0 lead. It added a run in the fourth for a 6-0 advantage before Belmont Abbey broke into the scoring column with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame. Doyle and Neyhouse had back-to-back singles with a throwing error on the latter hit resulting in runners at second and third. Moore followed with an RBI groundout.
The Flying Fleet added two runs in the fifth, while the Crusaders capped the scoring with a run in the seventh. Moore singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Kelkcee Fulton. A stolen base and wild pitch moved her third, allowing her to score on an infield error.
Hannah Hogue (1-5) earned the win for Erskine, while Belmont Abbey's Ivory Maltby (3-5) took the loss.
Belmont Abbey wraps up its eight-game homestand next Friday against King.
