Softball Splits on Day Two of Pioneer Classic

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont Abbey pounded out a season-high 17 hits and Ivorie Maltby did not allow an earned run in a complete-game effort as the Crusaders defeated Goldie-Beacom 9-4 Saturday at Tusculum's Pioneer Classic. In the second game of the day, Virginia-Wise broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the sixth to take a 4-3 victory.

Kaitlin Moore drove in four with three hits, while Katie Allison and Brianna Embler also had 3-for-4 games at the plate. Brooke Pegram, Elena Duran and Alexis Pereiro each had a pair of hits.

Against the Lightning, The Abbey (8-16) opened the scoring in the second when Morgan Smith's sacrifice fly to left plated Elana Duran, who had singled with one. In the third, Duran delivered a two-out, two-run single to make the score 3-0, then came home on Allison's triple.

The Crusaders added two more in the fourth when Moore doubled home Embler and Pegram before Goldey-Beacom capitalized on three errors for three runs, cutting the lead in half, 6-3, in the fifth. But Belmont Abbey struck right back in the bottom of the frame. Allison, who singled and stole second with one out, later came home on an infield single by Smith. Moore picked up RBIs three and four of the contest with a single to center.

The Lightning (0-4) added another run in the sixth, but got no closer off Maltbie, who struck out six to improve to 3-2 on the year. Kylie Doyle (0-2) took the loss.

In the nightcap, Melissa Neyhouse doubled, while Pegram, Duran, Smith continue their outstanding days with singles, however, Virginia-Wise rallied from a 3-0 deficit with four unanswered runs.

With a runner on third and two outs, Duran started the scoring with an infield RBI single, but she alertly took second when the shortstop threw wildly to first. After a walk and stolen base by Embler, Smith singled to right center to make the score 3-0. The Cavaliers tallied two in the bottom of the second, then tied the game with a single run in the third.

The score stayed that way until the sixth when a pair of doubles around a sacrifice bunt led to the UVW win. Annabeth Watkins (2-8) took the loss over 4.1 innings of relief. Lailyn Spencer (2-2) earned the win with a complete-game effort.

Belmont Abbey returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Anderson in the first of three straight days of doubleheader action.
