BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Belmont Abbey softball team split a double header with Lees-McRae this afternoon. The Bobcats took game one 9-3. The Crusaders took the second game 9-6. The Abbey now stands at 6-16-2 in 2017 and 4-4 against conference opponents. Lees-McRae is now 12-22 on the year and 4-6 in conference play.
In the first contest, Lees-McRae scored a combined three runs in the first two innings, but the Abbey quickly tied it up in its half of the third. Senior Dani Marietta reached on an error that scored Brooke Pegram for the first run of the game. Next, Anna Mixa singled in Peyton Wilson to knot the score at three. The Bobcats scored five runs over the next couple innings and won the contest 9-3.
Second baseman Vienna Benavides went 2-for-3 with a run. Wilson and Pegram also scored.
In the first inning of the second game, freshman Alexis Rogers singled down the left field line, and Wilson homered to give the Crusaders an early 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, freshman Melissa Neyhouse scored on a failed pickoff attempt by the Bobcats. Alexis Pereiro capped off the scoring with an RBI walk.
Later in the fifth inning, Mixa doubled in freshman Kelkcee Fulton for her first score of the day. Claire Doyle hit an RBI single, and Lauren Clifford followed up with an RBI to bring in Mixa. Senior Mackenzie Dziendziel would bring in Pereiro to capitalize on a Lees-McRae error, which was the fifth run of the inning for the Abbey. The final score was 9-6.
Wilson led the team's offensive surge in the game, going 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Neyhouse was also strong, going 2-for-4 with two runs. Eight Crusaders tallied at least one run. Wilson threw a complete game, surrendering just one walk.
The Crusaders will face King (TN) tomorrow in Bristol. The double header will begin at 2pm.
