WINGATE, NC - The Belmont Abbey softball team dropped a pair of contests today at Wingate.  Game scores were 6-2 and 1-0.  The Abbey now stands at 0-4 in 2017, while Wingate moved to 3-1.

In Game 1, the Abbey gave up some early runs, but responded in the third inning, as freshman Brianna Embler doubled in Brooke Pegram.  After that senior Mackenzie Dziendziel brought Embler home and the Crusaders pulled within a run at 3-2.  Wingate managed to get three runs across in the bottom half of the inning.

The Crusader pitching did not give up any runs after the third, and did not surrender a hit in the final two innings.

For the game, the Abbey offense was led by Embler's RBI hit and run scored as well as Dziendziel and shortstop Melissa Neyhouse each recording two hits.  Pitcher Shannan Mas threw a complete game.

In Game 2, the Abbey struck early as Embler singled and stole second base.  The team was unable to bring her home, but it kept getting runners into scoring position.  In the third, Dziendziel mad eit to second before the inning was over, making it the third frame in a row the team got a runner onto second.

In the fifth inning, the Bulldogs scored the only run of the game.  In the seventh, Belmont Abbey had the bases loaded, before a popup ended the contest.

Embler went 3-for-4 in the contest, upping her season batting average to .571.  Sophomore pitcher Peyton Wilson threw a complete game.

Head Coach Brooke McCraw offered the following comments on today's contests: "Facing two regionally ranked teams this last week was a great experience.  We have seen great things and will continue to get better, we look forward to playing again Saturday against FMU."
