BELMONT, N.C. -- Liam Maxwell tallied 10 kills and nine digs and Gavin Schaffer and Robert Nixon added eight kills each, leading Belmont Abbey to a 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-17) victory over Emmanuel in men's volleyball action Friday night at the Wheeler Center.
The Crusaders (6-16, 5-10) hit .302 as a team, led by Aaron Dierkes at .462 and Austin Quinn at .455. Maxwell connected at a .304 clip. Meanwhile, the Lions hit just .087 with 28 errors and seven Belmont Abbey blocks. Bryce Sullivan registered 34 assists and seven digs.
Gilberto Cervantes of Emmanuel led all attackers with 13 kills, but also had nine errors.
The visitors took the opening game, breaking a 17-17 tie with back-to-back kills. They stretched the lead to 22-18 before The Abbey clawed back, closing to within 23-22. However, the Lions earned the last two points for a 25-22 set victory.
Belmont Abbey opened a 5-1 lead in the second, but Emmanuel scored six of the next eight to even the set at 8-8. The Crusaders answered with nine of the next 12 points to lead 17-11, then stretched that to 21-12 after a ball handling error was whistled on the Lions. Emmanuel saved one set point before BAC evened the match with a 25-16 win.
The third set was all Belmont Abbey as it never trailed after opening with a 2-0 lead. A 13-6 run later pushed the lead to 17-9 enroute to a 25-14 victory.
The fourth set was tied 3-3 when the Crusaders took the lead for good. They used a 7-3 run for a 10-4 lead and were later ahead 14-10. Emmanuel cut the gap to 18-16, but Belmont Abbey surged ahead with five straight points. After a Lions kill, a service error and block by Nixon ended the match.
Belmont Abbey continues its four-game homestand tomorrow night when North Greenville visits for a 7 p.m. start.
