WILSON, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey ran into a hot-hitting Barton team Saturday afternoon, falling to the Bulldogs 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-23) in men's volleyball action at Wilson Gymnasium. Liam Maxwell tallied eight kills, while Robert Nixon added seven kills.
Barton hit .453 in the contest with 41 kills and seven errors in 75 attempts, while holding the Crusaders (3-11, 2-8) to .167 hitting (28-16-72). Bryce Sullivan registered 13 assists.
The Bulldogs (12-4, 10-2) opened the match with five straight points en route to a 20-10 lead in the first set. They grabbed a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-14 victory. In the second set, Barton answered a Belmont Abbey point with four straight and eight of the next 10 points. After the Crusaders tallied back-to-back kills, Barton scored nine of the next 11 for a 17-7 lead. The Abbey tried to rally, but the Bulldogs closed the set 25-13.
The third set was the most contested with the teams opening with a 7-7 tie. The Crusaders took their first lead at 8-7, but Barton answered with a 6-0 run for a 13-8 lead. The Abbey tallied three straight points to close to within two, 13-11, but Barton again stretched the lead with an 8-3 run. Later, five straight Crusader points turned a 22-16 margin to one, 22-21, but Belmont Abbey could never even the score in a 25-23 decision.
Belmont Abbey completes its five match stretch on the road on Thursday against North Greenville. The next home match is March 15 against NJIT.
