DUE WEST, S.C. -- Gavin Schaffer tallied 10 kills and two blocks, and Robert Nixon added nine against one error, but Erskine rode a .255 hitting percentage to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-18) victory over Belmont Abbey Thursday night at Belk Arena.
Belmont Abbey (3-9, 2-6) led 8-6 in the opening set, but Erskine (2-10, 2-6) used a 5-0 run to lead 11-8. After the Crusaders took two of the next three points to close within 12-10, four straight Flying Fleet points made the score 16-10. With the lead still six, 19-13, The Abbey mounted a furious comeback, gaining five straight and seven of the next eight points to tie the set at 20. But Erskine regained the momentum with back-to-back kills enroute to a 25-22 victory.
The second set was even at 15-all, when Belmont Abbey scored four of the next five points for a 19-16 lead. But again Erskine rallied, tallying seven of the next eight points for a 23-20 advantage. The Crusaders scored two in a row to cut the lead to 23-22, but the Flying Fleet answered right back for another 25-22 win.
In the third, Erskine broke a 10-10 tie with a 4-1 run, then used five straight points to push a 17-15 lead to 22-15. The set ended 25-18 in favor of the hosts.
The Crusaders continue their five-game road swing with a trip to Mount Olive and Barton next weekend, March 3-4.
