BELMONT, N.C. -- Liam Maxwell registered six kills and a .500 hitting percentage and Bryce Sullivan tallied 19 assists, but Barton posted a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-17) men's volleyball victory over Belmont Abbey Tuesday evening at the Wheeler Center.
Brennan Beyner and Robert Nixon shared the team lead in kills, also reaching six. Barton had a pair of players top double gfigures in kills -- Aleksa Brkovic (14) and Angelos Mandilaris (10) -- enroute to a .535 hitting percentage.
Barton (2-0, 1-0) tallied the first three points of the match, stretching the lead to 8-3. The Bulldogs lead was four at 13-9 when they ran off five of the next eight points for an 18-12 advantage. The teams split the next four points before Barton tallied two in a row, helping it to a 25-17 opening-set win.
In the second, Belmont Abbey (0-2, 0-1) dropped the first point, but lead 4-2 before three straight Barton points made the score 5-4. The teams were tied at 8-all, when the Bulldogs managed back-to-back points to take the lead for good. The Crusaders closed the gap to 13-12 but another two-point run pushed the lead back to three. At 24-19, Belmont Abbey made a final push with back-to-back points, but a service error led to a 25-21 setback.
Barton never trailed in the third after opening with a 4-0 lead. The Crusaders cut the deficit to two, 6-4, but could never get closer.
Belmont Abbey returns to action on Friday when it hosts Coker in non-conference action.
