Nixon Notches Eight Kills in Men's Volleyball Season Opener

BELMONT, N.C. -- Robert Nixon has eight kills and a .412 hitting percentage and Liam Maxwell added six kills, but 10th-ranked George Mason prevailed 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-16) in the men's volleyball season opener Friday night at the Wheeler Center.

The Patriots (1-0) registered 32 kills and just eight errors for a .429 hitting percentage, while limiting the Crusaders to just .148 on the attack. Pierce Pliapol talled 14 assists during the contest.

In the opening set, The Abbey trailed 19-14, but rallied to within 23-21. However, the Patriots got a kill and service ace to take the set. The second set was all GMU as the Patriots opened a 12-5 lead and stayed strong in a 25-11 victory.

Belmont Abbey led 8-7 in the third, but the Patriots tallied four straight points to open an 11-8 advantage. Later with the score, 13-9, they used a 12-7 run to close out the match.
