The Belmont Abbey College men's volleyball team fell to Conference Carolinas leader Erskine in straight sets on Tuesday night. The Abbey drops to 8-4 overall and 5-4 in conference play while Erskine improves to 7-3 overall and 6-0 in Conference Carolinas action.
The Crusaders out-blocked the Flying Fleet seven to two but were not able to capitalize on offense. Erskine out-hit the Crusaders with a .376 clip compared to a .286 for the Abbey.
In the first set, the teams traded points until 15 apiece when a kill from David Grandy spurred a 5-2 run. A late attack was started by a kill from senior middle blocker Justin Snyder but the Erskine offense closed out the set 25-22.
The second set ended in similar fashion with teams exchanging points until the end. Both teams hit poorly with Erskine hitting .289 and the Abbey at .158. Erskine lead the entire set and won 25-22.
In the third, Belmont Abbey led at 3-3 until 24-24. The teams traded points in late frames giving the Abbey two set points until eventually falling to Erskine 34-32.
The Abbey is back in action on Friday, February 26 at 7:00PM in the Wheeler Center against Coker.
