The Belmont Abbey men's volleyball team lost a hard-fought 3-1 decision to the visiting Pfeiffer University Falcons this evening in the Wheeler Center. Set scores were 16-25, 30-32, 25-16 and 16-25. Pfeiffer improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey drops to 1-8 overall and 1-5 in league play.
After dropping the first set, the two teams embarked in a marathon second set which included 23 ties and ten lead changes.
Belmont Abbey had two set points, at 29-28 and 30-29, but Pfeiffer won the last three points to garner a 2-0 lead in the match.
Belmont Abbey came out on fire in the third set, hitting .333 as the Crusaders roared ahead 11-4. The Falcons could only close to as few as five, and the Abbey closed the set by winning the last five points to stay alive and force a fourth set.
In the decisive set, Belmont Abbey led by scores of 7-3 and 14-7 before the Falcons won nine of the last 13 points to seal the win.
Defensively, libero Johnny Gomez posted 13 digs while Sullivan recorded eight. Fournell, Sullivan, Dustin Buell and Evan Young each totaled three block assists with Sullivan adding three solos. Lowenhagen and Buell both had one solo block as well.
