Smallwood Repeats as Conference Shot Put Champion

CENTRAL, S.C. -- Sophomore Julian Smallwood broke his own Conference Carolinas Championship record in the shot put with a throw of 15.95 meters (52'4"), winning the event for the second straight year. Smallwood was the only competitor to throw past 15 meters and he did that on three of this six attempts.

A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Smallwood started his day with a throw of 14.40 meters before fouling on the second try. He crossed 15 for the first time on the final preliminary attempt, 15.09. In the finals, he opened at 15.12 before his record-breaking effort. With the championship secured, his final throw was his longest, but he fouled, therefore it did not count. A provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championship, Smallwood will now await word on a postseason invitation.

Michael Koceja placed third in the 400 Hurdles with a time of 54.56, while Matthew Difrancesco was seventh in the 200m, finishing in 22.65.

The 4x400 relay team finished fifth, while the 4x110 team was sixth.

Mount Olive won the team title while the Crusaders finished eighth with 34 points.
