WINSTON SALEM, N.C. -- A pair of Belmont Abbey men's track and field athletes earned a spot in the Conference Carolinas Championship next month with their performances at the College Dual Meet Madness at the JDL Track.
Matthew Difrancesco, who secured a spot in the 60-meter field earlier this year, will now be eligible in the 200 meter after placing 15th on Sunday with a time of 22.87. Aspen Dillard qualified in the high jump, clearing 1.79m on Sunday.
Difrancecsco won his heat and placed sixth overall in the 200, running a time of 22.87, while Dillard placed third with a height of 1.79m. Difrancesco also posted a top-10 finish in the 60 meters, winning his heat.
Several other Crusaders turned in top placings as well. Alex Abelos was fifth in the 400 (52.36), while Michael Koceja was ninth (52.87) with both topping the section. Daniel Grosch was 10th in the 800 (2:02.20) and 12th in the mile (4:48.37), winning both heats.
In the field events, Julian Smallwood placed second in the shotput (first in his flight) with a throw of 15.46 meters.
Several other Crusaders took flights as well, including Dominic Pautler (Long Jump-Flight 2), Andrew Bryant (Long Jump-Flight 1), Dimarcus Vilcheck (400m-Section 5 and 800m-Section 4), Rory Witkowski (3000m-Section 2) and the 4x400 relay team.
The Crusaders compete next Saturday at the Camel City Invitational.
