Difrancesco Wins the 200 at Appalachian Open

BOONE, N.C. -- Matthew Difrancesco won the 200-meter dash and Alex Abalos finished third in the 300 meters, highlighting Belmont Abbey's effort at the 2018 Appalachian Open Indoor Track Meet.

As a team, the Crusaders finished eighth in the field mixed with Division I and II teams.

Difrancesco posted a time of 23.08, besting the school record of 23.36 set by Abalos in 2016. He also placed 10th in the 55-meter dash, covering the distance in 6.80 seconds. In the 300-meter race, The Abbey had three of the top nine finishers. In addition to Abalos' third (37.61), Michael Koceja was sixth (38.01) and Tomas Cerdeiras ninth (38.62).

Nick Snell earned a top-10 finish in the mile (10th/4:49.40), while also placing 13th in the 3000 meters (9:56.60).

Julian Smallwood was the top field performer for Belmont Abbey, placing fourth in the shotput. He threw a distance of 15.02 meters and now has the top two efforts in Conference Carolinas this season. Aspen Dillard was 12th in the high jump (1.76m), while Dominic Pautler was 11th in the long jump (6.24m).

Belmont Abbey returns to action next Sunday at the Dual Meet Madness in Winston Salem.
