WINSTON SALEM, N.C. -- Just three attempts in the 2017-18 indoor track and field season, Julian Smallwood qualified for the Conference Carolinas Championship, highlighting Belmont Abbey's effort at the JDL College Kick-off Classic. The sophomore bested the standard by over 10 feet, hitting 15.13 meters on his final preliminary attempt, then reaching 15.65 meters in his first try of the final round. The top three finishers at the event came from Division I Charlotte and North Carolina State.
Alex Abalos placed 15th in the 400 meters with a time of 51.66, while Daniel Grosch was 14th in the 800-meter run. The 4x400 relay team of Michael Koceja, Tomas Cerdeiras, Matthew Difrancesco and Alex Abalos was 10th in 3:29.31.
The meet was the first of the season, but also the only pre-Christmas action on the schedule.
