HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Belmont Abbey men's Outdoor Track & Field team competed in the VertKlasse Meeting this weekend, hosted by High Point University.
Junior Michael Koceja dashed to a first-place finish in his 400m heat, with a 49.36-second run. He came in ninth place overall as he set a new Belmont Abbey record in the event. In the 100m, Matthew Difrancesco was the Crusaders leader, as he ran to an 11.24-second finish. Andrew Bryant (12.03) and Peter Heron (12.03) also competed in this event.
The field events were also very strong. Freshman Aspen Dillard had a 1.79m leap in the High Jump, good enough for sixth place in his flight out of 20 competitors. Freshman Julian Smallwood recorded a 15.25m shot put, earning him a 5th-place finish out of 39 throwers. Tomas Cerdeiras came in sixth place in his javelin flight with a 41.09m throw.
Head Coach Nick Radkewich had some positive comments on his team's efforts this weekend, stating: "We had an outstanding performance from Men's Captain Mike Koceja, a new Crusader men's record in the 400m Dash by over half a second. Julian Smallwood overcame the most challenging conditions while finishing 5th in the men's shotput on Friday in a downpour."
Belmont Abbey will next compete in the Susan Rouse Invitational on April 7-8. That meet will be hosted by Conference Carolinas member Southern Wesleyan University.
