Freshman Julian Smallwood set a Belmont Abbey College Record with a 13.91m throw this afternoon at the JDL Kickoff Classic in Winston-Salem, NC. Smallwood's performance earned him a 14th-place finish out of 38 throwers.
Junior Michael Koceja led the Abbey in the 400M, which he ran in 51.22 seconds. Sophomore Alex Abalos (52.76), freshman Noah Gregory (54.15), and sophomore Mac Makela (55.73) also ran in this event. In the 200m, Cerdeiras' 24.68-second race paced Belmont Abbey.
In the mile run, the Crusaders were led by sophomore Thomas Eichorn, who completed the event in 4:52.88. Freshman Trey Heavener wasn't far behind, with a 5:09.83 run. For the 3000m run, Nicholas Snell crossed the finish line in 10:13.6, with Darvy Soignet (10:21.84) and Justin Haggerty (10:31.31) not far behind.
Head Coach Nick Radkewich shared his thoughts on the meet, stating "We saw a school record performance from freshman Julian Smallwood in the shotput, posting a 13.91 meter throw. In the high jump freshman Aspen Dillard cleared 1.85 meters for an outstanding Abbey debut."
The Abbey will next compete in the Wake Forest Invite, also at the JDL Fast Track, on January 21.
