BANNER ELK, NC – The Belmont Abbey men's and women's track and field programs began competing in the 2016 Conference Carolinas Championships this afternoon. Event's started at 1:00 today with the Javelin throws and ended the day with the 10,000 meter run. The championship is hosted by Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC. Event's will begin tomorrow morning at 11:30 AM with the shot put.
Freshmen Genevieve Hicken and Linda Randazzo started the crusaders off with throws of 20.51m and 19.50m in the women's javelin throw. Seniors Zachary Melvin and Joe Thierfelder would follow up for the men with throws of 41.87m and 41.59m in the men's javelin throw.
Junior Tarik Amon put the crusaders on the board in the triple jump with a 13.49m final jump.
Seniors, Joe Thierfelder and Darius Gardner both competed in the men's high jump and closed out with heights of 1.81m and 1.71m.
Thomas Eichorn and Justin Haggerty, who are competing in the conference championship for the first time, ran strong 1,500m run with times of 4:29.80 and 4:46.35.
Lucy Schmitz would lead the women, as she qualified for the finals, in the 1,500m run at a time 5:20.77 while Julia Otranto (5:25.30) and Amber Arias (5:33.33) would follow suit. Freshman, Elizabeth Labun, would also compete in the 1,500m run with a time of 5:38.63.
Warren Jones would compete alone in the 110m hurdles earning him a place in the finals, tomorrow afternoon, bringing in a time of 16.95.
Alex Abalos competed in the middle of the pack with a time of 51.30 in the 400m dash. While Liz Thierfelder lead the conference 400m dash prelim with a time of 57.56. Amanda Steiner would earn a personal record finish with a time of 1:05.60.
Freshman Matthew Difrancesco, senior Darius Gardner, and Sophomore Peter Heron competed in the 100m dash with times of 11.10, 11.85, and 12.49 respectively. While senior Brien Crisci would earn her place in the finals running at 12.49 in the 100m dash.
Connor Buhrmeister would lead his team in the 800m run with a personal best of 1:59.14. Joe Thierfelder (1:59.54), Patrick Lester (1:59.65), and Eduardo Cerdeiras (1:59.66) would finish on Buhrmeister's heels. Freshman Mackenzie Makela would finish 2:09.40 respectively.
Freshmen Julia Otranto and Shanon Corbett would compete in the women's 800m run earning times of 2:41.69 and 2:58.15.
Sophomore Michael Koceja would earn his place in the finals for the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 58.17.
In the women's 200m dash senior Brien Crisci and junior Liz Thierfelder would earn their mark in the finals with times of 25.71 and 25.51. Thierfelder time would be a personal best on the season.
Senior Lucy Schmitz would compete alone for the crusaders as she finished in second place with a time of 39:23.11
