Crusaders Complete Vertklasse Meeting on High Note

The Belmont Abbey Men's and Women's Track and field team completed Day 2 of the VertKlasse Meeting today at High Point University.

Liz Thierfelder had an exceptional performance in the 800 Meter Run, as she placed 11th out of 71 runners, and she finished third Division II runners with a 2:21 race.  Julia Otranto (2:31) and Shanon Corbett (2:59) completed the picture for the Abbey in this event.

Brien Crisci also put on an impressive show as she ran the 100 Meter Dash in 12.74 seconds, finishing fourth out of 13 Division II competitors in this event.  Crisco then ran the 200 Meter Dash in 26.25 seconds, good enough for fifth out of the 28 Division II runners.  Linda Randazzo (31.32) and Amanda Harrison (34.36) rounded out the field in this event.

As for the distance runners, Lucy Schmitz ran the 5000 Meter run in 19:08, placing 18th out of 44 NCAA runners. In the 1500 Meter run, Elizabeth Labun ran a 5:19 race, while Amber Arias ran the race in 5:30.

The Men's unit put up some impressive performances as well.  The distance runners stood out as Connor Buhrmeister ran the 3000 Meter Steeplechase in 9:55.19, good enough for 10th out of 22 NCAA competitors and second among Division II runners.  Teammate David Iverson was right behind him with a 9:55.71 race.  In the 1500 Meter Run, Zach Melvin finished in 4:27 while Justin Haggerty clocked a 4:46 time.

Joseph Thierfelder represented the Abbey in the Field Events, particularly the High Jump, where he recorded a 1.79 meter leap, good enough for second in Division II competition.

In the 400 Meter Dash, Michael Koceja recorded a 50.8-second race, 12th out of 72 total runners.  Connor Buhrmeister also competed in this event, which he finished in 54.54 seconds.

Several Crusaders ran in the 800 Meter Run today.  Patrick Lester led the team with a 2:01.64 race.  Thierfelder was just five spots behind, with a 2:02.89 time.  Rounding out the field were Zach Melvin (2:04), EJ Cerdeiras (2:06.54), Thomas Eichorn (2:06.6), and Mac Makela (2:07.56).  Darius Gardner was the lone Crusader in the 200 Meter dash, which he ran in 23.75 seconds.

The Crusaders will next race at the App State Outdoor Open on Friday April 8.
