Belmont Abbey Impressive in Day 1 of Vertklasse Meeting

The Belmont Abbey Men's and Women's Track & Field teams continued their 2016 campaign by competing in the Vertklasse Meeting at High Point University.

The Crusaders as a unit did very well considering the amount of Division I competition at the meet.  Senior Lucy Schmitz ran a 19:08 5000 Meter run, which placed fourth out of all the Division II runners in the event.  She also finished ahead of seven Division I runners.

Rounding out the field for the Crusader women were freshmen Elizabeth Labun and Amber Arias, who both ran in the 1500 Meter run.  Labun completed the race in 5:19, while Arias finished in 5:30.  Arias finished ahead of eight Division I runners, while Labun finished ahead of three more.

On the men's side, freshman Connor Buhrmeister finished 11th overall and second among Division II runners in the 3000 Meter Run with a time of 9:55.19.  Senior teammate David Iverson finished just one sport behind Buhrmeister with a 9:55.71 run.

Senior Joseph Thierfelder also had an impressive performance, finishing second among Division II competitors in the High Jump, with a 1.79M leap.

Zach Melvin and Justin Haggerty rounded out the field in the 1500 Meter Run.  Melvin finished the race in 4:27, while Haggerty clocked a 4:46 run.

The Crusaders will be back for more action tomorrow for Day 2 of the Meet.
