The Belmont Abbey men's indoor track and field team opened the season with several strong performances at the JDL College Kickoff Classic today in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Freshman Connor Buhrmeister, in his first collegiate indoor race, turned in a strong seventh place effort in the 1000 meter run, clocking a time of 2:43.23. Earlier, he led off the 4x800 meter relay that took fourth. He was joined by Thomas Eichorn, E.J. Cerdeiras and Patrick Lester as the quartet finished with a mark of 8:18.93.
In the mile, Eichorn raced to 20th with a mark of 4:53.70 and Nicholas Snell finished 21st in the 3000 with a time of 10:07.95.
In the medium distances, Michael Koceja turned in two solid performances, racing to eighth in the 800 with a time of 51:54 and 11th in the 300 with a time of 36.43.
Alex Abalos raced to 12th in the 800 with atime of 51.97 and posted a 62nd place effort in the 60 meter sprint at 7.48 seconds.
Belmont Abbey will return to the track January 16 when it travels to Chapel Hill to participate in the Art and Linda Maillet Open.
