BELMONT, N.C. - The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team led by three after three quarters, but a strong fourth gave Lynn a 10-9 win this afternoon. The Abbey dipped to 5-3 on the year. The Fighting Knights are now 7-1. It was Mountain Island Lacrosse Day for The Abbey. Mountain Island is a youth program that offers children the chance to play lacrosse.
Lynn took a 2-0 lead early, but a goal by Callum Tanner and a man-up goal by Adam Wiedemann tied the game at two heading into the second quarter. The second was all Abbey. Hunter Duford scored his first goal of the season just 1:07 into the period. Halfway through the quarter Jason Hollister put The Abbey in front 4-2. Then Kyle McGinley made it a 5-2 lead going into halftime. Defensively, the Crusaders forced Lynn to shoot 0-8 in the quarter.
Two Lynn goals early in the third made it a 5-4 Abbey lead. With 9:09 in the period, Sean Hanrahan set Tanner up for a score and a 6-4 edge. The Crusaders ended the quarter very strong, as McGinley tallued a man-up goal at the 1:35 mark and Liam Osborne scored on a pass from Tanner to give Belmont Abbey a 9-6 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Fighting Knights scored a man-up goal early in the fourth quarter, and scored three more goals in the period to take the 10-9 win.
On the day, Tanner the offensive efforts with two goals and an assist. Wiedemann scored a goal and handed out two assists. Dylan Harmon took a career-high 17 faceoffs. He won seven. Harley Whitham made 12 saves in goal.
Belmont Abbey will travel to Chowan University on Saturday, March 24, for a 3 p.m. contest.
