TIGERVILLE, S.C. - The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team competed in the Conference Carolinas Championship this afternoon against Limestone College. The Saints won the contest 18-11 to move to 17-1. The Crusaders are now 12-5.
Limestone scored first, but Belmont Abbey had an answer shortly after, as Jason Hollister set up Liam Osborne for a goal at the 10:47 mark. After another Limestone score, Wiedemann had a follow-up goal to even the score at two. Less than a minute later, midfielder Callum Tanner put The Abbey in front off a pass from Kyle McGinley. Later, with the game tied at four, Wiedemann found the back of the net with nine seconds remaining to give Belmont Abbey a 5-4 lead at the end of the period.
The second quarter was much like the first, going back and forth, and both teams capitalizing on offensive opportunities. Wiedemann was the first Crusader to score, as he took advantage of a Saints turnover and scored on the ensuing possession to knot the score at six. He would score again at the 2:42 point to give the Crusaders a 7-6 edge, also off a Limestone turnover. A late Limestone goal made it a 7-7 tie at the half.
In the third, The Abbey forced multiple Limestone turnovers, but came up just short of converting the chances into goals. The score was 14-7 heading into the final period.
Belmont Abbey had a solid fourth quarter, as Osborne took advantage of a man-up opportunity with 10:50 to play. The Abbey also ended the day strong, as it scored each of the final two goals of the contest, as Osborne scored on a pass from McGinley, then set up McGinley for a score with 1:04 in the game. Limestone, however, finished with the 18-11 win.
On the day, Osborne scored three goals and dished out two assists to finish with five points. McGinley also tallied five points with a goal and four assists. Wiedemann scored four goals. Harley Whitham made ten saves in goal.
The Crusaders await news of a potential appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
