Defenseman Brody Munro intercepted a Wingate pass on the first possession of the game. Less than five minutes in to the contest, freshman Collin Grippo put the Abbey in front first off a pass from Sean Hanrahan. Wingate scored three goals later in the quarter. The Crusaders still got good looks as shots hit the post and the Wingate defense faced high pressure, but the Bulldogs led 3-1 at the end of the period.
Less than a minute into the second period, Liam Osborne got some momentum going for the Abbey with a man-down goal. The next Crusader goal came with seven seconds remaining in the half, which pulled the Abbey to within two at 6-4.
Belmont Abbey kept forcing Bulldog turnovers, and getting good looks at the net. At the 6:51 mark, Adam Wiedemann found the back of the net on a pass from Osborne to make it an 8-5 Wingate advantage. He scored again with less than a minute to go in the quarter, and the Bulldogs held a 9-6 advantage heading in to the final period.
Belmont Abbey got multiple shots in the opening minutes, but just not enough for a score. Wingate scored first in the period, but Kyle McGinley pulled the Abbey closer with a man-up goal at 6:20 off a Wiedemann pass to make it an 11-7 game. That would be the score at the end of the contest.
On the day, Wiedemann's two goals and two assists led the Abbey's offensive efforts. Osborne earned a goal and two assists. Jason Hollister chipped in with a pair of goals. Junior Harley Whitham had a team-high five ground balls. He also made 10 saves in goal.
