The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team lost to Mt. Olive 10-8 on the campus of Limestone College, who hosted this year's Conference Carolinas tournament. The Crusaders finish the year with a 12-4 record. Mt. Olive will play Limestone in the conference championship game.
The Trojans led early, and also scored a goal in the final two minutes of the first quarter to go up 3-0. The Crusaders responded as Connor Sellars scored a goal off his own rebound less than a minute into the second quarter. Mt. Olive won the faceoff, but the Abbey forced a turnover and capitalized on the ensuing possession, with Callum Tanner scoring off a pass from Sellars to pull the Abbey within one. After the teams went back and forth for a while, Devin Cruz tied the game at three at the 8:19 mark. With under two minutes to go, Belmont Abbey took advantage of a man-up opportunity as Adam Wiedemann put the Abbey in front 4-3 heading into halftime.
In the third, the Trojans scored three goals early in the period and later took a 7-4 lead. The Crusaders remained poised, and Brendan McGovern, Jason Hollister, and Sellars each scored a goal in the last 5:24 of the quarter to tie the game at 8 heading into the final quarter.
The back-and-forth battle continued with Mt. Olive scoring a goal early in the quarter, while McGovern scored his second goal of the day at the 11:09 mark off a pass from Sellars. The game was still tied at eight with two minutes to play when Mt. Olive put the winning goal in the net and took the game 10-8.
On the night, Sellars was the offensive leader with two goals and two assists. McGovern also scored twice for the Abbey. On the defensive end, Merek Regan and Devin Cruz each caused two Trojan turnovers and picked up three ground balls. Goalie Harley Whitham did an excellent job in the net, making a season-high 15 saves.
